In Calgary right now you’re looking at roughly $10 to $18 per square foot for the whole shebang. That usually covers a nice mid-range wood and the labor to get it down but if your subfloor needs some serious love or you’re eyeing a rare exotic wood that number can definitely climb

There’s a pretty noticeable gap walnut is the luxury pick and can easily cost you 20% to 40% more than cherry. While cherry is beautiful and ages into a deep red, walnut is harder to source and has that high end dark look that everyone in Calgary is chasing right now

It won’t stop it 100%, but it’s a lifesaver in our dry climate. Because it’s built in layers, it’s about 50% more stable than solid wood so when our humidity drops to nothing in February you won’t see those massive gaps that make solid wood floors look like they’re pulling apart.

Ash is actually tougher than oak and can take a beating from heavy boots but it hates standing water. If you use it in a mudroom, you’ll need a rock solid sealant and a good mat to catch the melting slush and salt otherwise that moisture will eventually mess with the wood

Honestly, stay away from pine if you have big dogs it’s a soft wood and those claws will leave gouges and dents within the first week. Oak is the way to go here it’s much denser and has a busy grain pattern that does a great job of hiding the inevitable little scratches from a happy pup
